JourneyAmerica 2.0 is a cross country -- Asheville NC to California to Asheville -- bicycle trip. Three goals with this trip:
1. Raise $10,000.00 for Asheville Homeless Network (AHN)
2. Raise money for homeless veterans through several national organizations
3. Raise awareness of the solutions to homelessness
I bet you looked twice at the last one, didn't you? Everyone is already aware of the homeless problem in this country. It's on the news, in the paper and, if your city is anywhere near typical, you see homeless every morning on your way to work or maybe each evening on your way home...or both.
Every state, county and municipal government has a plan to reduce homelessness within it'a political area of responsibility. Folks just need to be made aware of the solutions that are already in place and help support these solutions.
Money raised on this trip for homelessness goes to AHN's Adopt-a-Homeless-Person program as well as national organizations that work with homeless veterans.
Of course, if you'd like to slide me a few dollars to cover bike repairs, it would certainly be appreciated.
Read the blog about the trip and preparations. I promise, it won't be a typical, boring bike journal blog that tells you, "I rode so many miles, in such and such a temperature at whatever speed. It has random thoughts that come to me and I share with you. Oh yah, you will get tons of info about the trip too...just not the boring details.
Every trip of this nature has small and sometimes not-so-small items that you wish you had with you. This trip is NOT a credit card tour where I ride from motel-to-motel and say I've ridden across the country. 60 and 70 mile days in the saddle followed by camping out in the woods (or a new friends couch), helps to keep the trip simple. STILL, there might be some things that would be nice to have...here's where you can find out what.
Asheville Homeless Network Here's where you can read more about the purpose of the bicycle trip as well as everything that AHN is up to. AHN is the nation's only homeless program run for and by homeless folks.
And yes, that's a cigarette in my mouth in the picture. This will be the second cross-country bicycle run I've done and I smoked all during the last one too! March 19, 2009 I had open heart surgery -- quadruple bypass. Any questions?
